Michigan,又译密执安州,密兹根州或密歇根州。出自齐佩瓦语的Mica Gams。其中Mica意思是“广大的”,而Gams意思是“水域”。合在一起就是“广大的水域”,指的就是五大湖(密西根州滨临五大湖中的四个)。后被法国人根据读音转写为Michigan。
