forebear 祖先fore-,在前。be, 存在。-ar, 后缀,人。即先辈,祖先。
forebear 祖先;祖宗fore-在forehead前额、forearm前臂和before等中都有出现,多用来指时间和空间上的前,与希腊拉丁前缀pro-和pre-等同源。而-bear部分则一不是指熊,二不是指bear动词承担;忍受等,而是be-的施动者名词,也就是说,forebear的字面意思是“one who was before”。
